Creating a household budget is having an understanding about every cent you earn and every cent you spend: what comes in vs. what comes out.

Budgeting is a learned skill and one vital for life & business. Now is the time to get honest with yourself.

If you currently eat out three nights a week and have take away coffee every day, you must include that in your current budget ( and be prepared to forgo it if you need to).

(image from 401K)

Usually a budget results in the realization you may be spending more that you earn because you might be relying on perpetual debt with credit cards or credit facilities. You must be able to manage and reduce any personal debt before embarking on your business.

Calculate the money you require to live on, then work out how you can reduce it. Try to limit your personal expenses, especially in the early stages of your business. You want to have enough money in your business for it to survive and grow!

With cardboard furniture the flavour of the moment, take a look at the foldschool collection of do-it-yourself furniture for kids.

The foldschool collection, including a stool, chair and rocker, is designed by Swiss based architect Nicola Enrico Stäubli and handmade by – you!

This is contemporary design at it’s sustainable best, as Stäubli pursues the idea that simplicity and elegance can be combined, and that good design is about aesthetics, function and materials and doesn’t have to cost the earth.

In fact, as these designs can be made from recycled cardboard and also recycled at the end of their use, perhaps that makes them twice as good for the environment!

The patterns are available to download from the internet for printing in sections onto A4 or A3 sheets of paper. Once joined together the pattern can be adhered to a cardboard sheet for cutting, folding and assembling.

All you need to complete the job are simple tools like a ruler, cutting knife, glue and a few spare hours. Easy to follow instructions, as well as a suggested mini sample for practice, are available online, with a bunch of inspiring images and diagrams.

Now here’s the best bit. Because Stäubli believes that good design should be available to everyone, everywhere, the patterns are available to download for free!

Pei-Shan Wu, founder of eco-friendly products website Ash n Juls.Ash N Juls’ range of practical and stylish lunch boxes and drink bottles can be viewed and ordered online.

This article originally appeared on the Seven Canaries website. Seven Canaries are Bizness Babes graduates. They have a stall at the Sustainable Living Festival this week-end.

Ever considered just how much rubbish is produced every lunchtime across the country? Yoghurt containers, chip wrappers, plastic sandwich bags and juice boxes are all destined for the rubbish bins; ending up as landfill or possibly in nearby waterways endangering marine life.

The goal of packing a litterless lunch is having no waste to throw out when you’re finished eating. Anything that can’t be eaten should be brought home to be washed and reused. With all the great products available today, reducing lunchtime waste couldn't be easier.

Here are five practical tips to packing a litterless lunch:

1. Reusable food containers: ditch paper and plastic bags and pack lunches in reusable, eco-friendly containers such as food-grade stainless steel lunch containers that can be used throughout the entire year.

2. Refillable drink bottles: refillable stainless steel drink bottles encourage users to enjoy tap water right throughout the day. Choose BPA free, a safe substitute to plastic bottles which are a major contributor to landfill.

3. Buy in bulk and save: cut back on packaging avoiding individually wrapped snacks such as yoghurt, dried fruit, chips and juices. Buy larger sizes and portion out into reusable containers, saving both resources and money.

4. Shop and cook with kids: involve children in preparing meals for a fun family activity. Kids are more likely to enjoy eating their own creations and less likely to throw away food knowing the work that went into it.

5. Buy fresh: eliminate quick fix pre-packaged lunches so that only compostable scraps like apple cores and banana peels remain after eating. Not only is it healthier for the whole family, it supports Australian farmers.

Although many schools have implemented litterless lunch programs, the concept need not stop at schools.

Think about what you take to work or the waste that is produced when you buy a fast food meal. Start replacing pre-packaged meals and snacks with homemade meals stored in reusable containers.

Most of us love coming up with the ideas and concepts and get excited about clever marketing ideas, but very few entrepreneurs will admit they enjoy the financial side of their business (other than counting the money!).

Crunching numbers is a necessary evil! You cannot skip this part. Your financial research brings all of your ideas together and helps you establish whether or not your business is/will be viable.

There are three financial budgets you need to understand in the development of your business concept to test the feasibility. They are:

Start-up costs

Operating or Running Costs

Cost of Goods

These are combined into a series of spreadsheets (which you can download for free when you purchase our book):

Balance Sheets

Profit & Loss

Cash Flow

As well as your business budgets, you need to have a personal budget.

This article (in full) originally appeared on the Seven Canaries website. They are Bizness Babes graduates. Seven Canaries have a stall at the Sustainable Living Festival this week-end here in Melbourne.

When most of us don’t get a good night sleep we usually take it lying down, yet research indicates that with a few deliberate changes to old habits, a good night’s sleep may well be within reach.

Not surprisingly poor sleeping patterns are linked to negative emotional and physical health benefits. It might not be the only reason why things are not going right in your world, but if your life is already busy and stressed then not getting a good night’s sleep can only add to your dilemma.

In order to turn this around, the first thing to assess is your sleeping environment. The bedroom should be an oasis of calm; free of distractions and designated for sleeping only. If you use your bedroom for other activities (watching TV, talking on the phone and emailing), your mind will be cluttered and associate the space with these other pursuits, making sleep harder to achieve.

Comfort is paramount, not just ensuring that the bed itself is comfortable, but also that the amount of light and noise filtering into your bedroom does not interrupt your sleep. Fit curtains or blinds to block out the light, add soundproofing or even use earplugs and a mask to do the job. This is the room where your body will rest and recharge, so ensuring that the room is free of toxins and irritants is important.

Once you have your room sorted out it’s time to work on yourself. Try training your body clock by setting a strict routine of rising and going to bed at the same time each day. After a while you should start to fall into a pattern, but be careful not to go to bed when you are not sleepy as this can actually have a negative effect on sleeping patterns as it can reinforce the habit of lying in bed awake.

Set aside time before lights out to worry about the day, or commit your thoughts to a journal so that you don’t take your troubles to bed with you. Shallow breathing can impair sleep so focus on the rhythm of your breathing making sure each breath comes deep from the diaphragm, or mentally repeat a soothing word or phrase to wind down.

We all spend a significant amount of time sleeping and it is importantly both physically and emotionally that we get the best sleep possible for ourselves. Work to achieve a healthy sleeping pattern and your body and mind will thank you for it.

Seasons in Chinese Medicine: Summer

--------

Much of the underlying precepts in Chinese medicine are about living in harmony with nature, syncing with the ebb and flow of life and the movement through the seasons. In stark contrast, modern life is very much removed from nature. Our homes are warm in winter, cool in summer, we go from home to work, living busy lives within our built environments. We protect ourselves from the outside world and no longer allow the influences of nature to shape our lives. However, through its deep understanding of the natural world and its relationship to all life, Chinese medicine can provide much insight…

Summer = Yang

Yang energy builds during spring to peak in summer, resulting in more energy to enjoy the long, bright days, outdoor life and activities. It is all about movement, expression and extroversion. Yang is bright, light and active – a time to retire late and rise early, express the new you, show your colours and spread some joy in the world.

The Fire Element

Relating to the Fire element, Summer is associated with the colour red, the heart and small intestine and the emotion of joy. Fire cannot exist on its own, it relies on fuel and air to thrive. Hence, the Fire element defines summer as an ideal time to socialise and connect with others.

The Fire element is also about inspiration. In Australia, Summer coincides with New Year making this the perfect time to set new goals for yourself, reflect back on the past year and decide what you would like to change. Think “big picture,” and aim for this, placing stepping-stones in the direction towards the life that you want to lead, the person who you truly are.

Summer Food

Food is important in Summer, as it is the rest of the year. It is good to always eat seasonally and locally to assist your body in adapting to each season. Summer is abundant in melons, stone fruits and amazing vegetables. They are Yang foods – and epitomise the season. Think first before you delight in them all – could you grow this in your backyard? If the answer is “yes,” then enjoy. If not, then resist the temptation and look for an alternative that can be grown close to home.

Chinese medicine considers food differently to Western medicine. It not only looks at the nutrient content, it also takes into account flavours and temperatures.

The flavour associated with the Fire element is bitter. A small amount of the correct flavour helps to bring balance to the diet, although too much can be weakening, so aim to add a small amount of bitter food to your diet every day throughout summer.

Bitter foods include: Grains: rye - Vegetables: lettuce, romaine, chicory, rocquette (arugula) - Fruit: rhubarb - Herbs and spices: fenugreek - Nuts and seeds: cherry seeds

Cooling foods balance the heat of Summer. Salads, fresh seasonal fruits, cucumber and, of course, watermelon. Chinese medicine considers watermelon to be ‘cold,’ it is useful to clear excessive heat, and best enjoyed on scorching hot summer days.

The best cooking method for Summer reflects the season well – stir-frying over a high heat to add the heat, energy or activity of the season.

Summer is about becoming inspired, expressing yourself, engaging with others, and taking an active part in the world. It brings joy and activity into your life. It provides us with delicious foods – especially those sweet intoxicating stone fruits. Summer is the season to enjoy life fully and all the abundance it has to offer.

Despite the activity of the season, it is still necessary to have some “me time” each day – be that by watching the sunset, enjoying your favourite cup of tea, cuddling with a loved one, reading a book or watching the clouds drift overhead … and don’t forget good quality rest to keep up with this busy, active time.

The advice provided here is general. If there is any disharmony that you are experiencing, seek the advice of a qualified and registered Chinese herbalist or other appropriate health professional.

As the owner of a business you are often faced with decisions - some more difficult than others. I have always believed in meeting a tough choice head on, and making a thoughtful yet swift decision. And, I stick with it and try not to worry once a course of action has been decided. Second guessing wont help you. And, repeat after me - sometimes, perfect enough is good enough.

20 Ways to Get Good Karma - Dalai Lama

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three R’s:

- Respect for self,

- Respect for others and

- Responsibility for all your actions.

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.

7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.

10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and

think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

14. Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

19. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.

20. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

There are 4 different Customer Buying Styles:

The Analytical Style

The analytical style, has a low degree of assertiveness and of emotional expression. People with this style focus on fact more than feelings. They evaluate situations objectively and gather plenty of data before making a decision. They prefer an organized work environment where they know exactly what is expected of them.

The Driver Style

The driver working style, has a high degree of assertiveness and a low degree of emotional expression. People with this style know where they want to go and how they are going get there. They are good at managing tasks and results-oriented.

The Amiable style

The amiable style, has a low degree of assertiveness and a high degree of emotional expression. People with this style are responsive and friendly – but not necessarily forceful or direct.

The expressive style

The expressive style, has a high degree of assertiveness and a high degree of emotional expression. People with this style are outgoing and persuasive. They’re enthusiastic, friendly, and prefer to work with other people. Expressives thrive in the spotlight.

As a small business often you don’t have access to huge marketing budgets so the best way of promotion is through word of mouth. We should never underestimate just how powerful the affect word of mouth can be on your business. These effects can be both positive and negative, it is all determined by the service experience that your customers have received when interacting with your business.

Customers love and cherish businesses that treat them the way they want to be treated. They’ll even pay more to get good service. Just look at these statistics that prove the point.

•	Customers spend up to 10 percent more for the same product with better service.

•	A customer will tell anywhere from 9 to 12 people when he or she gets good service.

•	When that customer receives poor service, he or she will tell up to 20 people!

So how well you communicate and establish relationships with your customers is the essence of customers service. This relationship doesn’t have to take a long time – it can often happen in an instant. (it certainly pays to please)

We've talked about Pinterest quite a lot, but they say you need to hear/read things multiple times before you actually 'hear' them! So are you on Pinterest?

We are now on Pinterest! go check out our boards - follow us and we'll follow you back!

Not sure what you use Pinterest for?

Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard. It lets you organize and share all the ace things you find in your life. You can browse pinboards created by other people. Browse and discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. Every time you are on the internet you can pin things that shout out at you. A girlfriend and I would like to open up an ice cream/coffee shop so I have created a board specifically for that called, "Our Shop". One thing I have learnt is that you just have to believe that you can make your own business - if you are passionate and are prepared to work hard - the SKY is the limit.

One of the tasks we get you to do in your first week of the course is a 'mood board'. You create your own 'mood board' by sitting on the floor with a heap of magazines, some scissors, glue and texta's. Creative visualization is SUCH A POWERFUL tool. Pinterest makes it easy as to compile all that inspires you by making it part of your internet ritual!

We are really new to Pinterest but will be updating weekly, we would love to share with all our babes (past, present& future). If you need an invite to join pinterest, leave us a comment and we will get onto it!

The Founder of The Karma Soap Company, Felicity O'Donohue is a Bizness Babe Graduate. Her company is, The Karma Soap Company. Handmade soap made with love!

The Karma Soap Company’s Handmade soap story is a simple one. As a single Mum to two energetic boys, Felicity O’Donohue was not only looking for a work-at-home business opportunity, she also wanted to minimise the impact her business could make on the planet. After all, it was her boys who would inherit her legacy.

Felicity found the answer in goats milk soap. After dabbling in handmade soaps as Christmas gifts for family and friends, Felicity realised she’d discovered the perfect recipe for her at-home-business. With lots of research and then a little more, The Karma Soap Company was born, delivering handmade soaps that are free from additives and packed full of fresh goats milk.

1. What are the 3 key things you learnt from the BB course?

* I learnt a lot of 'names' in the course. A Lot of things i was already implementing within my business, I didn't know what it's technical name was and why i was doing it!!

* Financials was awesome, yet so scary to do. I'm a numbers gal, but wholly dooley i wanted to hide under the desk a few times.

* I also had to ask myself a lot of questions about my business and target market i hadn't even thought of, still trying to perfect that one!!

2. How did the BB course help you?

I think just being accepted into the BB course gave me an immense self confidence boost! The course helped me understand the business mindset and can now dissect things the way any business person would. The course was really the first networking event i had ever really attended. I am still in contact with all my BB's and chat to some weekly for updates. I believe if you want to 'do' something you need to surround yourself with like-minded people or your never going to get the support and encouragement you need and desire.

3. What would you say to someone who was thinking about applying to the course?

If your thinking of applying for a spot in the BB course, I'd say STOP THINKING AND GO DO IT!! It is such a valuable course and have had so many amazing opportunities arise since doing the course. Go get em' you'll love it!!

Sky-Lee is a Bizness Babe graduate from 2011 and her business is called Worn Only Once. After unsuccessful efforts to sell her own bridesmaid dresses via traditional methods, Sky-Lee thought there had to be an easier way to market preloved dresses. It was then, in 2008 that Worn Only Once was born.

A working mother of 2 boys, Sky-Lee enjoys the girly change of pace from her usual hectic active lifestyle. While she never thought she would end up working within the wedding industry, it is certainly a career path that she is more than happy to follow. Who doesn't love a good wedding!

Sky-Lee shares some of her Bizness Babes experience with us:

1. What are the 3 key things you learnt from the BB course?

* I learnt that business is a funny thing, success is not instant, it is a long term commitment.

* Accounting is not so fun.

* Never under value your product.

2. How did the BB course help you?

BB course helped me put some creative perspective into the marketing of my business and gave me some direction for which to take my business.

3. What would you say to someone who was thinking about applying to the course?

If a person was searching for a course like this, I would not sit around and 'think' about applying, I would definitely tell them to apply because it brings a lot of insight into the business world. It is smarter to gain as much knowledge as possible before committing to something that may not be viable.

WHY?

Why do you do what you do?

Why don't you do want you want to do?

Why are you scared?

Why do you let other peoples opinions matter?

WHAT is stopping you from being the very best you can be?

Just a few questions we'd like you to sit down and write about (journal). Acknowledge that negative voice in you head, say hi and then let it go -- let's get to the core of WHO you are, WHAT & WHY you are here on earth. Just by writing only 1 A4 page a day (even if it is on a scrap of paper) about all the things going on in your head - will give you some relief & clarity. This is just FOR YOU, no-one else. No judgements it's for your eyes only. Try it for the next SEVEN days - I dare you!

We'd love to hear your experience of journalling, whether you are an oldtimer or if it's something you are just delving into. Please leave us a comment.

What Would Buddha Tweet?
Here is our paradox. We have never had more communications tools at our disposal, and yet we have never been less effective at communicating. It’s human nature to want the shiny new things. The amateur golfer thinks that with that new titanium driver she’ll be as good as Tiger Woods. And we believe that social marketing will magically transform our mediocre messages into the word of God.
Like all good Buddhists, I believe that when things become chaotic and complicated, it becomes ever more urgent to cut through the noise, simplify and hone in on what really matters.

Here are three timeless principles of good cause-related communications that will be as important in ten years as they are today: heart, simplicity, and story.

Heart – engage your community from a place of passion and compassion. Facts matter less.
Simplicity – if you can’t tell your brand story to a 9-year-old it’s no good.
Story – the root of all:
“Millions survive without love or home, almost none in silence; the opposite of silence leads quickly to narrative, and the sound of story is the dominant sound of our lives…” Reynolds Price

Excerpts from The Bizness Book, by Vickie Burkinshaw

From Section One - Bizness and You

Why do you really want to go into business?

Being clear about your motivations will influence the way you set up and run your business, and will help you stay focused as your business grows.

It’s important to capture how you feel right now, as this helps you create a vision of your business. Your vision helps to form your goals and can keep you on track.

Think about where you want to be in three to five years time. Imagine what it feels like, what it looks like, how it smells and tastes. (Vision Boad/Pintrest)

Try to be as specific as possible about what will define success for you, as we are all different. The more concrete you are about your dreams, the more likely you are to succeed.

If you want to start a business to spend more time with the kids and in three years time you find yourself working 24 hours a day and growling at them, then you haven’t achieved your vision and you need to refocus your energy on making a change.

If you desire to run your business from a beach in Tahiti and the closest thing you get to Tahiti in the first five years is your screen saver, then you need to have a long hard look at your business to see if it’s ever going to get you to that beach.
